BOB AND CAMILLE AT HOME ON MAUI
WHEN IN DOUBT, TAKE HER OUT
Bob generously decided to celebrate Camille's 50th birthday June 4th by whisking her away to the Big Island of Hawaii. Here we are at the airport before the flight.
PUDDLE JUMPER
We flew Pacific Wings - a one-propeller plane with room for 9 passengers. It's just a hop, skip and jump from Maui to Big Island. Less than 30 miles as the tern flies.
It is always a treat to get a bird's eye view of the islands, in this case we are looking at the north shore and the Hana coast.
DESTINATION: PEACE AND TRANQUILITY
We stayed at Waianuhea on the east side the nights of June 3rd and 4th. For more pictures, click on An Elegant Escape.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
After a restful night at Waianuhea, Camille woke up on her 50th Birthday and opened a present from her Mom and Dad. They had sent her a beautiful gold watch with a diamond in the face and hearts in the band!

KONA BREWERY
Before checking into a second bed and breakfast on the west side, we stopped at the Kona Brewing Company for lunch. Bob drove right to it even though it had been four years since we had last been here with Mike Illo. The beer and pizza was every bit as good as we remembered. It was so good, in fact that after eating here on Saturday, we came back for lunch again on Sunday.
KONA COFFEE
Hawaii is the perfect place to grow good coffee. This is a glimpse of a small coffee plantation. From what we saw, anyone with a spare acre on the west side uses it to grow coffee.
WELCOME TO THE WEST SIDE
At check-in time on June 5th, we came to a place where the welcoming committee looked like this. For more photos, click on First Class.
SIGHTSEEING
This is what tourists do. They drive around in a rented car and take photos. On the left is pandanus tectorius, locally known as hala or screw pine. Brought to Hawaii centuries ago, every part of the tree provides materials for housing, food, medicine, ornaments, fishing, religion, and folklore. On the right, Bob enjoys the salt air from a precarious perch.

A GREAT PLACE FOR A DUMP
What trip would be complete without a trip to the landfill? We just had to check it out. There are two landfills on Big Island and this is the one on the west side. As you can see, there isn't much else going on out here on the lava fields.
WAIMEA RANCHLAND
We drove from the landfill to Waimea to see how long it would take. It only took 20 minutes to get from barren lava to lush pastures.
We didn't alter the color in this picture at all. If anything, it was more electric than shown here. Waimea is the home of the Parker Ranch, the largest private ranch under single ownership in the United States,
spreading approximately 175,000 acres.
LAST CALL
At the end of the trip, we drove to one of 21 transfer stations to drop off our recycling.
LUCKY GIRL
Camille poses with some of the presents she has received for simply being born and enjoying a long life. She wears her new watch. From the left are some games; marbles, tiddly winks and Zitternix (a German Pick-up-stick game), a barrette made from Belizean Black Poison Wood, a Hair pin made from Honduran Rosewood, a few books, luxurious scented moisturizing cream from Pamela and some new music by Greg Brown. Not shown is the digital camera Bob used to take this photo, the little things we have now forgotten and one mysterious something yet to arrive. Bob has been giving Camille presents for this birthday for months and it isn't over yet!
TI BERRIES
These are the fruit of the Ti plant or Cordyline fruticosa As far as we know, these aren't edible. But they sure look inviting!
LUNCH ESCAPE
It took Camille a year to figure out that if she walked down this path
past the lagoon behind Aloha Recycling
she would end up here.
This has become a non-negotiable part of Camille's day. A barefoot walk on the beach only takes 30 minutes and is incredibly refreshing. These photos were taken on June 17.
MEANWHILE
Back at the yard, Jodie and Lloyd have taken on the hot, sweaty chore of trimming up the hibiscus between the Maui Monument and Aloha Recycling office trailers.
MAUI FILM FESTIVAL
On June 17th, we went to see Woody Harrelson's movie "Go Further" at Maui Community College with Bob and Kelly King, Will and Amanda, Pam and Shaun and others. For more photos, click on Maui Film Festival.
BIRTHDAY BOUQUET
As Camille was adding photos to the album on June 18th, a van drove up with this fragrant birthday gift from Mahlon. Thank you, Mahlon for keeping the birthday celebration alive!
TARO CHIPS
Paul and Jennifer gave us two nice taro corms which Bob turned into chips on Sunday, June 19.
NEW BREWING SYSTEM
Bob has begun brewing beer in these HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) kegs and is phasing out the old, vinyl kegs.
HAPPY SPUDS
Although it has turned dry, these potatoes are flourishing.
