The other day I went to a real doctor. Being as it was my first visit, the receptionist handed me a clipboard with paperwork to fill out. I took my seat by a sunny window and stared at the form.
It was a waiver for a procedure involving the prostate. I immediately began to doubt myself. I had always thought that only men had prostates but maybe that’s just because women never have trouble with theirs in the same way that men don’t often get breast cancer.
I picked up the pen to sign the form a couple of times but couldn’t bring myself to. Finally, I gave up and took my clipboard back to the front desk. “I know this is silly,” I said to the woman, “but I always thought women didn’t have prostates.”
She took one look at the form and blushed. Then she handed me another clipboard with the correct form. After that, everything went well. The doctor was nice. There was nothing physically wrong with me and as an extra bonus I had found out I wasn’t crazy right there in the waiting room!
