LEAPS AND BOUNDS

Mom17
What a gem! – Mom at age 17

My mother has amazed everyone with the huge progress she has made. She will be moved to a nursing home later this week, after nearly three weeks in ICU. After her broken bones strengthen, she will begin rehabilitation therapy.

Against all odds, she hung in through the first awful week which included many pints of blood, being hooked up to a ventilator, and surgery on her broken femur. I think her steady progress is due to the diligence of her family, taking turns at her bedside even when she was unable to respond.

The family has kept close tabs on her progress through the use of a discussion forum. This was of great comfort to me given the distance between us. Using this tool, the family was able to share photos and information in real time.

Mom is able to talk on the phone now and I suspect her phone is ringing off the hook. Bob and I both spoke with her last weekend. Despite her pain and the frustration of being confined to a hospital bed, she has not lost her sense of humor. Which is good, because she has a long recovery ahead of her.
