According to this morning’s BBC story, Congo rebels seize gorilla park Virunga, made famous by Dian Fossey and home of half of the remaining mountain gorillas on earth has been seized by Tutsi rebels in pursuit of Hutu rebels.
Nine gorillas have been killed this year, allegedly by Gen Nkunda’s men, sparking outrage among conservationists.
The Tutsis and the Hutus have been at war with each other for years. In 1994 two extremist Hutu militia groups exterminated between five hundred thousand and one million Tutsis, sending nearly two million Hutus into exile upon which thousands died.

Meanwhile, at least 1,773 Iraqi civilians were killed in August, bringing the estimated collateral damage to well over six hundred thousand civilians since the United States began bombing Baghdad four years ago.
